Muller confident of Villarreal turnaround

Bayern Munich attacker Thomas Muller believes the second leg will favour his side as they head into their tie against Villarreal 1-0 down (Bayern 4/11, Villarreal 2/1 – To Qualify).

The Bundesliga champions were expected to comfortably dispatch Unai Emery’s side in the first leg but a disappointing display led to a defeat.

Arnaut Danjuma scored the only goal of the game in the first half and now Bayern will have to earn their place in the semi-finals the hard way.

It was uncharacteristic of a Bayern side who have been typically dominant in Germany this season.

They are nine points clear of Borussia Dortmund after scoring 86 goals in 29 matches and they came into the quarter-final on the back of an 8-2 aggregate win against RB Salzburg.

Bayern last won the Champions League (Outright – Bayern 4/1, Villarreal 33/1) back in 2020 when Kingsley Coman’s header was enough to see the edge past PSG.

And, Muller is full of belief they can continue their European journey with victory in the second leg.

“We’ll be able to prepare ourselves better because we have the experience from the first leg,” he said.

“We’ve seen what they did well and can adapt some things which didn’t go so well in the first leg.

“The conditions are (going to be) different, a bit unusual for Villarreal. We’re playing at our own stadium now. It requires full power and we’re confident about that.”

Bayern have been beaten only twice at the Allianz Arena across all competitions this season, with Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Monchengladbach the victors.

Villarreal arrive in Germany in the middle of a poor run domestically, with Emery’s side having won only one of their last five matches in La Liga.
