Betfred Super League is back!

Paul Sculthorpe Saints

Betfred Super League is back – and this could well be the biggest and best season for a long time.

The countdown is well and truly on for the February 10 opener, when the all-conquering Saints take on Catalans Dragons in a repeat of the 2021 Grand Final.

The three-time back-to-back champions toppled the League Leaders’ Shield winners 12-10 in a thriller at Old Trafford, and I’m sure it will be another cracker a week on Thursday.

Saints are 2/1 favourites at Betfred to go and win a historic fourth Super League title – and we’re also favourites at 3/1 for the Betfred Challenge Cup.

There’s been some significant changes at the club in the off-season, losing a number of key stars – namely Lachlan Coote, Theo Fages, Kevin Naiqama and James Bentley to name just four. However, I genuinely think our recruitment has been outstanding, and could lead to an even more dominant St Helens in 2022.

Kristian Woolf has made some smart signings – namely Will Hopoate and Konrad Hurrell. The former joins with big praises from Woolf, while Hurrell says he is in the best shape of his career after his first pre-season since joining from Leeds. We all know what a powerhouse he is, and he will be a great addition to an already strong squad, be it starting or off the bench.

Other additions include James Bell from Leigh – a great competitor with a high work-rate, but also someone who has the subtle skills to open up defence. Curtis Sironen, a strong back-rower who stands at 6’4″ and 110kg, brings a presence to the Saints pack – while Joey Lussick is a very smart number nine who has the ability to either create opportunities for others or devastate defences himself. I’m sure his partnership with skipper James Roby will only develop his game. He’s an outstanding signing.

So, add to that the continued rise of the young stars at the club – namely Jack Welsby and Lewis Dodd – who have now cemented their starting spots in the team, plus the likes of Alex Walmsley, Tommy Makinson and Morgan Knowles, and I can’t see anything but another successful season for the mighty Saints.

Our major contenders this season will again be the Catalans Dragons – so roll on next week’s opener! I can’t wait.
