Champions League Betting Odds: City firmly in control

Champions League reaction

It was a comfortable evening for Manchester City.

They have one foot in the quarter-final of the Champions League after scoring four against Sporting before half-time.

Riyad Mahrez got the Blues off to the perfect start, netting after just seven minutes. The Algerian’s effort was initially disallowed, but after a VAR check, the goal was given.

It was almost two-nil just moments later after Kevin de Bruyne picked out Raheem Sterling. He chipped it into the middle for John Stones, who got his head on it and it bounced agonisingly past the far post. Sporting looked like they could be in for two long evenings…

Scratch that – it was two-nil moments later due to a wonderful Bernardo Silva stunner.

Sporting settled down a little bit after that and started to create opportunities of their own. Firstly, Rodri gave the ball away in midfield, but Pedro Goncalves took too many touches and couldn’t get the shot away.

Then Ricardo Esgaio squeezed in a cross from the left but couldn’t find Paulinho who was waiting in the middle.

However, Phil Foden all but secured City’s place into the next round when he got in on the act around the half hour mark.

Bernardo Silva then scored his second of the night and City’s fourth – job done.

The second half, as you can imagine, was more of the same. Bernardo Silva thought he’d grabbed his hat-trick, but a VAR check had deemed the Portuguese midfielder to be offside.

City did grab a fifth though – Raheem Sterling with a peach from around 25 yards out.

The other game taking place on the night was arguably the tie of the round.

Lionel Messi once again facing his old foes, Kylian Mbappe potentially auditioning for a place at the Bernabeu next summer…

PSG were on top for the majority of the opening 45 minutes. The first real test for Thibaut Courtois came about 20 minutes in as Kylian Mbappe latched onto a great ball over the top and was through on goal. However, he scuffed his shot but Courtois still had to be alert to stick out a leg and clear.

The French side tried again to probe an opening as Lionel Messi found Mbappe – who was at the centre of everything PSG were creating – who then played in Nuno Mendes but Daniel Carvajal was there to block it.

Messi and Mbappe in particular looked more threatening after the break. The two combined with Mbappe feeding Messi on the edge of the area and the Argentinian curled a strong effort into Courtois’ gloves.

PSG were awarded a penalty after Mbappe was brought down but Courtois once again came to the rescue, denying Messi from 12 yards out.

But it was Kylian Mbappe who came to the rescue for PSG and broke Madrid hearts, grabbing the winner in the 93rd minute with a wonderful goal. A potentially huge moment in this tie.

FT: PSG 1-0 Real Madrid

City remain the 9/4 favourites to lift Europe’s biggest prize this season, ahead of Bayern Munich at 7/2. Liverpool are next in the betting at 5/1, ahead of Chelsea and PSG at 7/1.
