Dolphins decide on McDaniel appointment

The Miami Dolphins (40/1 – to win the Super Bowl in 2023) have confirmed they have agreed to a deal to make San Francisco 49ers offensive co-ordinator Mike McDaniel their new head coach.

The Dolphins parted company with Brian Flores at the end of the regular season and he is now suing the NFL, the New York Giants and every other NFL franchise alleging discrimination in hiring practices.

However, Miami chiefs have spent the last few weeks holding interviews and they believe McDaniel is the one to take them forward, after deciding against hiring Dallas Cowboys offensive co-ordinator Kellen Moore.

McDaniel, who identifies as multiracial, becomes the fourth current minority head coach in the NFL and he will be desperate to prove his worth to the Dolphins, who play in the AFC East.

The 38-year-old helped the 49ers rank seventh in total offence this season, in what was his first year as the offensive co-ordinator.

He received plaudits for the way he used Pro Bowl receiver Deebo Samuel and he will now be tasked with trying to get the best out of Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

McDaniel’s appointment was confirmed on Sunday, the same day as the AFC won the Pro Bowl 41-35 in Las Vegas.

Attention now turns to Sunday’s Super Bowl, which will get under way at 23:30 GMT at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

The Los Angeles Rams will have the advantage of playing this year’s Super Bowl on home soil, and they are 1/2 to beat the Cincinnati Bengals, who can be backed at 13/8 to win their maiden Vince Lombardi trophy.

Both teams have injuries to contend with at present, but it promises to be a fascinating battle as the Rams defence try to stop Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow from finding his groove on the west coast.
