Ex-teammate backs “impressive” Lampard at Everton

Frank Lampard

Frank Lampard will get a “free hit” at Everton for at least 12 months because expectations at Goodison Park are so low.

That’s the view of his ex-England teammate Paul Robinson, who told The Betfred Football Show that the new Toffees boss is an “impressive and knowledgeable guy”.

Ex-Leeds and Tottenham goalkeeper Robinson believes Lampard’s tenure at Chelsea was undervalued, given his part in bringing through young players like Mason Mount and Reece James.

“He is a good fit for Everton,” said the 42-year-old. “He’s a likeable guy who is well switched on.”

Reflecting on the end of the transfer window on Monday, Robinson believes Everton’s recruitment of midfield duo Donny Van De Beek and Dele Alli from Manchester United and Spurs respectively was good business.

He believes Everton, along with former club Leeds, won’t get relegated from the Premier League this season – he believes it will be three of the current bottom four that face the drop to the Championship.

Robinson also reckons Eddie Howe made some “wise” signings for Newcastle – particularly Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood and Bruno Guimaraes, a £40m acquisition from Lyon.

All three players will be ready for the battle ahead, as Newcastle need to “win games, and win games quickly” according to Robinson.

He labelled 24-year-old Brazilian international Guimaraes as “world class”, and the first real big transfer by the Saudi-backed Magpies.

He also hailed Liverpool’s decision to splash £50m on Colombian Luis Diaz, although he believes Jurgen Klopp’s hand was in the end forced by the interest of Tottenham.

Turning to the FA Cup this weekend, Robinson predicts wins for Manchester United, Spurs, Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest and Liverpool in their fourth round ties against Middlesbrough, Brighton, Boreham Wood, Leicester and Cardiff respectively.

Meanwhile, Robinson told Betfred TV that West Ham at Kidderminster “has FA Cup shock written all over it”.
