Newcastle suffer Trippier injury blow

Kieran Trippier

Newcastle United (To stay up – 1/7, to be relegated – 4/1) defender Kieran Trippier will be out of action for some time after scans confirmed he fractured his fifth metatarsal.

The right-back scored the only goal of the game as the Magpies defeated Aston Villa 1-0 to earn their third successive win in the Premier League.

He stepped up to net his second free-kick in consecutive games as the deflected strike zipped past Emi Martinez to give them the advantage.

However, it proved to be a mixed day for the 31-year-old, as he had to be substituted off in the second half.

Now, Newcastle’s worst fears have been confirmed and he looks set to be out of action for a number of weeks, though there is no exact timescale on his recovery.

It is a huge blow for Eddie Howe’s side who have looked a much better team following their January transfer activity.

They had picked up ten points in the four league games since Trippier’s arrival with the former Atletico Madrid man making a big impact.

He was named captain for the Villa clash in the absence of usual skipper Jamaal Lascelles, who missed the game through illness.

A club statement read: “Trippier underwent an X-ray immediately after the game and scans have shown a fracture to the fifth metatarsal bone in his left foot.

“Everyone at the club wishes Kieran a speedy recovery.”

The Magpies do have options to cover Trippier, with Sweden itnernati0nal Emil Krafth replacing him as a like-for-like swap.

Javi Manquillo is also a right-back option, though he himself had to be withdrawn late in the first half after suffering an injury while playing as a makeshift left-back.

Jacob Murphy has also played in the position, but is more of a natural winger.

Newcastle’s first game without Trippier comes on Saturday as they travel to top-four outfit West Ham (Match betting – West Ham 7/10, draw 3/1, Newcastle 4/1) with Howe’s side hoping to extend their four-point cushion above the relegation zone.
